Article Blog: Surprise : I became surprised after reading an article about sloths.I was surprised when I read that the three-toed sloths had two extra neck vertebrae. It was surprising because I didn't know that a three-toed sloth could have extra vertebrae . This tells me that there are animals that have interesting features. Summary: I learned that the three-toed sloths facial coloring that makes it look as if it is always smiling. Another thing I learned is that three-toed sloths have two extra neck vertebrae that let them turn their heads almost all the way around. Backward - Looking: I knew that sloths had algae growing on their fur. I now know from reading the article, that a if a sloth is attacked it will lash out with its claws and shriek. Article Blog: Surprise : I became surprised after reading an article about lions.I was surprised when I read that prides can have up to 40 animals. It was surprising because I didn't know that a pride could have so much lions/lionesses. This tells me that there are animals that hunt in huge packs. Summary: I learned that male and females fight any lions that try to join their pride. Another thing I learned is that males only stay in the pride for 2 to 4 years. Backward - Looking: I knew that lions hunt in prides. I now know from reading the article, that a lions roar can be heard from miles away. Another thing that I learned from the article is that in a pride, the male eats the prey first, then the lioness, and then the cubs get whatever is left. Article Blog: Surprise: I became surprised after reading an article about orcas.I was surprised when I read that orcas weigh 12,000 lbs. It was surprising because I didn't know that orcas could weigh so much. This tells me that there are animals that weigh more than an average school bus. Summary: I learned that orcas eat different animals depending on their environment. IE: National Geographic states, "depending on season and where they are, their diet varies - some orcas eat more fish and squid than seals and penguins." Backward - Looking: I knew that orcas hunted seals, penguins, fish, squid and sometimes other whales. I also knew that orcas used their colors - black and white as camouflage to hunt. I now know from reading the article, that orcas weigh 12,000 lbs. Another thing that I learned from the article is that orcas hunt specific things based off of their environment.
