Weekly Blog 9/21 - 9/28

Summary: This week our class learned about the Layers of the Earth. These layers are... Crust, Mantle, and the Core. The Core is broken up into two layers. Here is some information about the Earth's layers. The crust is broken into many pieces called plates that float on top of the mantle. It is about 3-5 miles thick under the ocean and the temperature is 1,600 degrees F. It is made of mostly water, basalt, and granite. The mantle is part solid and part liquid. The mantle is 1,800 miles thick and is made of silicon, oxygen, magnesium, iron, aluminum, calcium, potassium, and sodium. It is 1,600-4,000 degrees F. The lithosphere/crust is the upper part of the mantle. The asthenosphere is the lower part of the mantle that flows and moves the plates of the Earth. The outer core is like the layer of very hot metals. It can get to 4,000-9,000 degrees F and is so hot that the metals in it are all in a liquid state. It is the only liquid layer of the Earth. It is 1,800 miles beneath the crust and about 800 miles thick. The Inner Core has temperatures and pressures so great that the metals in it are squeezed together and are not able to move about like a liquid. They  are forced to vibrate in place as a solid. The Inner core is about 800,000 miles thick and may reach to 9,000 degrees F.

SP2: This week we made a model of the 'Layers of Earth.'We
didn't make clay models,we cut out the layers (after we colored them), and glued them to our background.
