Summary: During this week, we talked about  osmosis (the  movement of water molecules across the membrane - from low concentration to high concentration). Then each table (we have 8 tables) were given an egg to pour a liquid in. Our team (table 3) decided to pour in MTN Dew, a yellow-green liquid. The egg kept rolling around in the liquid and the egg was floating as well! It was also extremely acidic-looking and the egg was constantly covered in bubbles, except for the top, because we didn't pour in enough of the MTN Dew to cover the egg. SP3: Planning and carrying out investigations :  Did you plan and carry out an investigation?  Yes, I did carry out an investigation (with the rest of our table) when we dunked our egg in MTN Dew. First, we wrote down our egg's starting weight. Then we put it in MTN Dew. Finally, we wrote down a table and observed our egg. Weekly Blog (10|6|16) - Cell Energy Cycle

Summary: During this week, our class was instructed to complete a packet for the Gizmo  titled Cell Energy Cycle. When I was filling out this packet, I learned that there were two types of respiration - aerobic & anaerobic respiration. I also learned that while aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria, anaerobic respiration takes place within the cytoplasm. Another thing that I learned while filling out this packet is that pyruvic stands for pyruvic acid. One other thing that I learned is that the chemical formula for pyruvic acid is C3H4O3. S&EP: Developing and using models -  Did you build a model, draw a picture, created a concept map, etc? I used a model when using Gizmos to answer the questions on the packet, such as "What happens in the mitochondrion?" Project Blog (9|23|16) - Cell Wars (President of Cell-land: Who is the best organelle?)

Summary: During this week, we had to turn in our video along with the rest of our project (video link: CLN (Cell-land News CELL WARS GOLGI BODIES INTERVIEW) ). We also had to post smears, which was basically roasting other teams in order for our candidate to win. Smearing was when you put up a post putting other candidates (future presidents of cell-land, which were the given organelles) in a bad light so our candidate could win. Backward-Looking: In what ways have you gotten better at this kind of work?  I have gotten better at this kind of work (video editing) because I know how to use a certain type of video editing software properly, or at least enough to produce a good music video with a few classmates. Another way I have gotten better at this kind of work is uploading. Last year, we were told to do a project, and I had no idea how to upload my video from iMovie to my Google Drive, and I had to seek help from another classmate, who told me how. Weekly Blog 9|17|16 - Mitochondria/Cell Wars

Summary: During this week, I learned that the mitochondria's function was to make its own energy called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). I also learned that the mitochondria was the "powerhouse" of the cell. Another thing that I learned about the mitochondria was that the mitochondria uses a specific way of creating ATP called the electron transport chain. One other thing that I learned about the mitochondria is that the type of energy it makes (ATP) is a type of energy that every cell in our body can use. SP3: Planning and carrying out investigations: I decided to collect data for our script in our Cell Wars project. The script is for our video that is due this Wednesday. The data will be used to show why our organelle (Golgi apparatus, named after a scientist, Camillo Golgi) is the best candidate for president of Cell-land (the previous president, Nobelius Nucleus had a "rapid decline in his health forcing him to decline"). Weekly Blog 9|9|16 - Golgi Body

Summary: During this week, our class was given a 'Cell Wars' project, where 'the president of cell-land' had a 'rapid decline' in his health and he was forced to resign. Our teacher gave us eight different options, and groups were formed based off of the organelle that we chose. I chose Golgi bodies (also known as the Golgi apparatus) and spent most of the week researching their function, smearing other candidates (basically just roasting). While I was researching, I found out that the Golgi apparatus was named after the Italian scientist (who is also a biologist, pathologist, physician, and Nobel laureate ) Camillo Golgi.   SP1: Asking questions and defining problems  Over the week, I had a repeating question while smearing other candidates: does the Golgi apparatus cause any diseases? Summary:   During this week, I learned that a plant cell has a cell wall whereas the animal cell does not have a cell wall. I also learned that the cell was discovered by a scientist by the name of Robert Hooke in 1655 using a microscope. Another thing that I learned about the cell and cell theory was that cell theory was " credited to the work of Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden in the 1830s. " SP8: Obtain, evaluate and communicate information We had to complete an online worksheet titled Hypothesis, Variables, Controls, Oh My! then corrected the worksheet with our class, where first, we would be given scientific terms and were asked to define them in our own words. Another section of the Google Doc. asked us to highlight the "testable questions" (a testable question is a question that is asked by one who can solve it using the Scientific Method). Weekly Blog! Summary:  During this week, our team and I worked on our script which you can see right here (right ->). We are planning on making more compost bags and giving them out to our class and random passerby so they can use them to put their food waste into it (apple cores, orange peels, egg shells).  SP2:  During our food waste project, our team worked on making compost bags and the script for when we present on Exhibition Night. If you want to make a compost bag, here is how to do it: Get some newspaper to make the compost bag. Fold it in a triangle Then take one of the corners and fold it diagonally. Take the other corner, and do the same to the other side.  Now, when you are left with a strange diamond-shape, take one of the folds of the paper, and fold it over the line that the corners make.
